The painter has more than 200 works

Johann M.G. Schmittdner, very well-known in the German Church, and in XVI Century Italy.
He belonged to the School of Augsburg and developed his style in Venice, under Joaquín
   Von Sandrat.

 The painter's Works
Johann Georg Melchior Schmittner [Schmidtner; Schmiedtmer; Schmitner; Schmittmer],
(b Augsburg, 1625; d Augsburg, 1705). German painter and draughtsman. The pupil and friend of Johann Heinrich Schönfeld, he was a ‘powerful historical painter’ (von Stetten) who spent 15 years in Italy. His earliest dated altar picture was the Transfiguration (1657; ex-St Salvator, Augsburg; destr. 1945). Schmittner produced altarpieces, mainly for Swabian churches, as well as many drawings (Munich, Staatl. Graph. Samml.; Stuttgart, Stadtgal.; Darmstadt, Hess. Landesmus.), notably the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit (1685; Augsburg, Schaezlerpal.), a design for the high altar of Hailtingen parish church near Riedlingen. Well-modulated shading of the figures is a characteristic trait of his drawings, but there is little sign of originality in the conception and composition of the figures. The influence of the Roman High Baroque is unmistakable, for example in the attributed drawing of the Erection of the Cross (Munich, Staatl. Graph. Samml.) after Alessandro Tiarini. Schönfeld’s style constantly shows through too, to the point of copying, as in the chalk drawing of the Martyrdom of St Apollonia (Munich, Staatl. Graph. Samml.). Bartholomäus Kilian II and Georg Andreas Wolfgang (1631-1716) made engravings (Hollstein) based on Schmittner’s work.
